 Cancer is a disease in which cells start to divide abnormally. Following that, these uncontrollable cells turn into malignant tumours, where cells begin to migrate to distant sites. For instance, they spread to lymph nodes and other tissues. In severe cases, the tumour may spread throughout the body.  

Depending on the severity of cancer, it has been divided into four main stages:
  1. First Stage- Cancer has been diagnosed in a small area but hasn’t progressed yet.
  2. Second Stage- Cancer has grown up but hasn’t invaded yet. 
  3. Third Stage - Cancer has grown in size. It might have spread to lymph nodes.
  4. Fourth Stage- Cancer has severely spread to other body parts and organs.

    With that said, cancer causes harsh pain to patients. According to World Cancer Day~ Cancer accounted for 10 million deaths in 2021. However, advancements in the medical field are leading us towards better cancer treatment facilities. That being said, there are many types of advanced cancer treatments available now; Chemotherapy is one of them. 

What’s Chemotherapy?

    Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that prevents the growth, division, and reproduction of cancerous cells. In chemotherapy, doctors use drugs to kill cancer cells. There are a variety of chemotherapies that doctors may prescribe to their patients.
      On the basis of stage, type and treatment of cancer, oncologists may advise patients to go for chemotherapy before, during, or after the surgery. In many cases, patients are confused as to why chemotherapy is needed after surgery. Now, let's collect some information for the same. 

      Why Do Patients Need Chemotherapy After Surgery?
      Cancer is a type of disease that often comes back. The cells may grow in the same area again, or in other parts. Despite using the most effective treatment, recurrence is believed to be caused by some cells remaining after treatment.

      The two major causes of cancer coming back after surgery are:
      • A few cancerous cells might have been left during the surgery
      • The tiny cancer cells might have ruptured from their parent cells, but doctors were unable to diagnose them due to their small size. 
      However, with the aid of chemotherapy, we can stop cancer from spreading. Hence, it’s advisable to go for adjuvant chemotherapy treatment, if your doctor suggests it. 
       Things You Should Know About Chemotherapy

      Chemotherapy is administered into the blood. Because of this, it destroys tumour cells wherever they are present. It also works for destroying those cells, which are paving their way to cancer.

      The basics of chemotherapy drugs: 

      • Chemotherapy drugs kill the splitting cells so that they don't divide. 
      • Doctors assign different chemotherapy drugs based on the type of cancer treatment. 
      • Doctors may give tablets, capsules, injections, or a drip
      Since chemotherapy kills dividing cells, it may have some adverse effects on the healthy cells too. 

      Chemotherapy has debilitating effects on:

      • Hair

      • Skin, and

      • Bone marrow. 

      But the good news is, these side effects are temporary and patients can recover from them once the chemo-treatment is over.
